The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
