The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool together, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
