Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
