He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
