A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
